Otter Brewery to provide cask ales at this year's Folk Festival

Friday 15 July 2016

One of the West Country’s largest producers of cask-conditioned ales is gearing up for a rousing new addition to its busy summer festival line up.

Otter Brewery, based in East Devon, has been chosen by the organisers of the 2016 Cambridge Folk Festival to supply all of the cask ale for this year’s four-day event.

Brands including Otter Amber, Otter Ale, Otter Bitter and Otter Bright will be served in bars across the festival ground with a sell out capacity of 14,000 people expected on site each day.

The brewery already provides the cask ale infrastructure for the festival bars at Reading, Download, Bestival and Beautiful Days. This summer marks the first time the family run business have worked with Cambridge which has been held every year since 1965 in the beautiful setting of Cherry Hinton Hall.

Neil Jones, Operations Director for Cambridge Live commented: “To this day the Festival shares much of the same philosophy from the early days, though it has never stopped moving forward and developing, incorporating new ideas and features. Otter with their impressive eco credentials, community spirit and superb beers were the natural fit for us. Here’s to a great festival and plenty of contented revellers.”

Patrick McCaig, Director of Otter Brewery added: “We’re very happy to be on board with this beer and music lovers paradise! The Otter beers are quite well established on the UK festival circuit and have really helped bring a ‘small brewer ethos’ to our placements, supported by some pretty ethical practices and brewing processes. This really chimes well with Cambridge’s own green ethos and as we continue to celebrate our 25th year they recently marked their 50th! With such a strong synergy in place we are looking forward to working closely with them this summer and hopefully again in the future.”

About Otter Brewery:

  • Established in 1990 by David and Mary Ann McCaig, the building of the Otter Brewery was, and still is, a labour of love. Beer is definitely in the blood.
  • From the underground eco cellar which is naturally cooled using the earth’s core temperature to the willow beds that clean and recycle their waste water, green thoughts run through every aspect of production. The brewery’s underground eco cellar uses the earth’s natural core temperature to chill 5,000 casks of beer and saves over 6½ tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.
  • The brewery draws water directly from the head springs of the River Otter in East Devon to produce their core range of five real ales which includes Otter Ale, Otter Amber, Otter Head, Otter Bright, Otter Bitter and Tarka Lager – Devon’s first pure lager, made from four natural ingredients.
  • Currently marking its first 25 years and still family run, the business has always sought to be an integral part of the community it serves. It is well known for its Premiership rugby association via the Exeter Chiefs and supports several major UK music festivals. Their aim has always been to produce consistent and great tasting beers full of character and produced in an environmentally friendly way.
